Improvements Begin on the GCCCT in Fairfax County
Improvements have begun on the Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail (GCCCT) in Fairfax County, Virginia, as part of the Park Authority’s commitment to expand their trail network. Approximately 1.6 miles (within Wakefield Park) of this 40-mile-long trail that connects the entire county from one end to another will receive improvements. Contractor Accubid Construction Services, Inc. (Accubid), will pave the trail between Accotink Parkway and Braddock Road with asphalt and concrete and will replace one pedestrian bridge.
christopher is very familiar with the project, as we prepared the site plan for the Wakefield Park GCCCT proposed improvements. christopher’s Public Division worked closely with the Park Authority, starting with developing a base map from GIS information and walking the trail with this base map alongside the Park Authority to identify areas needing improvement. The information recorded during the walks was used to develop a rough grading plan to submit to the County for permitting the maintenance work to the trail. Improvements include paving and adding shoulders to portions of the trail that are currently gravel and replacing several culverts to improve drainage to improve the service life of the newly paved trail.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is funding this $600,000 project by way of a 2014 Transportation Bond and 2012 Park Bond. Accubid will begin work this month with an anticipated completion date of May 2018.
